El Real

3 out of 5 Stars
Website
1201 Westheimer Rd
Houston, TX 77006
(713) 524-1201

El Real. Saturday night of their opening weekend. Party of 4. I'm going to be forgiving.....that's no easy feat, even for Houston's famed Bryan Caswell (ESPECIALLY for Caswell - fresh off his spotlight on Next Iron Chef - that's mucho pressure).

Not accepting reservations, I was pleasantly surprised by  the reasonable 30 minutes wait. My crew ordered a round of weak Mexican martinis (tear), and munched on some fresh chips and salsa at the front full bar (complete with your favorite Mexican beers (Modelo and Pacifico).

El Real boasts a friendly, bustling atmosphere - think a modern day Ninfa's with enormous ceilings and old westerns playing on a large screen.

We were seated at the front outdoor patio on Westheimer which made for a great scene, especially once the former Chances strip gets redeveloped.

It's my understanding that the concept of El Real is a nod to old school tex mex....so don't go looking for unique menu items....you won't find them here (unless you count the flying grasshopper that landed on our table, but that's neither here nor there).

In my book, a cardinal rule to tex mex feasting is kicking off a meal with queso, and if you don't share that sentiment, well.....that just sounds like a personal problem....UNLESS....you are at El Real.

Not to knock Velveeta queso....but let's leave that recipe for house parties. Our bowl of electric yellow Velveeta + Ro-tel did not cut it. I take that back - it was served SO THICK, it CUT my chip in half...every dip. Within 5 minutes, our bowl had become the consistency of GACK! No Bueno!

Out came our order of beef nachos, piled with healthy cuts of well seasoned fajita meat, refried beans, tomatoes, guac, sour cream and shredded cheese. A nice rebound from the the queso, but nothing to melt over either.

The grand finale was the pound of fajitas (half chicken, half beef). We requested our meat to be served medium......which made for DELICIOUS, TENDER beef, but our chicken came out undercooked and as a result, untouched. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed the beef dressed with great guac salad, garlic butter, and sizzling onions wrapped in fresh tortillas. It has to be said that side of rice was sinfully overcooked and underflavored....needs a complete re-haul.

Despite our lack of silverware and plates (they were very late, but we made due), the staff was all smiles and helped make the overall meal enjoyable.

I know Caswell's team has the brains and talent to make El Real a success, but they won't be able to rely on its general charm, Montrose location and reasonable prices too long.

Bottom line: Come to El Real if you are looking for a casual, fun atmosphere with your buddies, but leave the fajitas and ritas for El Tiempo (at least for now).

Canyon Creek Cafe

3 out of 5 Stars

Website
6603 Westcott Street
Houston, TX 77007-2040
(713) 864-5885

Preface: This review speaks more to Canyon Creek as a restaurant and less as a bar. Proceed.

Per usual, my pal and I came to squander all of our boot camp efforts at the sinfully close-by Canyon Creek Cafe for some good ol' bar food.

In the midst of March Madness, parking was shockingly easy (but it was only 8pm.....can't say the same for what happens at 10).

Being a GORGEOUS night, we opted for patio seating and snagged a bench. Blame it on our low blood sugar from our workout, but it took a good 15 minutes for us to figure out we need to get menus and order at the bar.....but in all fairness - that's not made clear at all at Canyon Creek...foul 1.

The menu reads like an upscale bar with quirky names for "sammiches" and trendy items like chipotle mayo and fried egg toppings (which clearly speak to me).

We settled on fried pickles for apps and the Luckenback Burger (which to no surprise, was dressed with chipotle mayo and a fried egg, as well as bacon) and a side of onion rings and sweet potato fries.

Our order was finally placed at the BUSY bar, and 20 minutes later, our food came out.......but what happened to our fried pickles that we  purchased? It will forever be a mystery. (foul 2).

Thankfully, they never came because our burger proved to be massive and our sides were heaping.

I was hoping that the first bite from my burger would be much like my first bite from the Rancor at Petrol Station....but it wasn't. I totally missed the fried egg climax.....the part where it bursts and the yolk dresses the rest of the burger like the ultimate accessory. Maybe the meat was too thick, maybe the bread stole its thunder? I barely even got a taste of that chipotle mayo and the bacon needed to be a little more cremated. The burger definitely had to be a little less cooked.

WOAH. I'm spending way too much time on a burger that simply has the potential to be FAR better. (foul 3).

The sweet potato fries were on par with all good sweet potato fries....thin, but not shoestrings. Onion rings were http://bomb.com style.....the highlight for me, personally.

Another fail.....their silverware service....or lack thereof, since it took 3 attempts to get any. (EJECTED!!!!!!!)

Enough with the debbie downers. Canyon Creek has some things going for it....

Like the daily drink specials complete with fat free frozen libations (mojitos and margs).

The mural of folks tubing down the river on the patio wall will capture any true Texan's heart.

Bottom line: Cheers to beers (and other drinks at CCC), jeers to dining here...unless you are too tipsy to care.

Sidenote: I hope you appreciated the basketball theme, although I have no idea if it complies with NCAA or NBA rules. :)

Jus' Mac

3.5 out of 5 Stars

2617 Yale St
Houston, TX 77008
(713) 622-8646

If I were to sum up my childhood as a meal it would easily be Kraft Mac and Cheese (original) with a 1 bunless hot dog.....sliced.

Then I went to Jus' Mac......and right there on the menu....was The Homerun........

Jus' Mac put a price on my childhood....just under $8! My parents were ROBBED!

Yup, Jus' Mac serves hot dog mac and cheese......with a bread crumb topping.

But I wasn't feeling like a kid on my first trip to the restaurant that serves Jus' Mac (and now paninis).

I went with the Blue Cheese Mac instead, you know, because I'm an adult.....eating at my childhood fantasy....a mac and cheese restaurant.

Confession: If mac and cheese is on a menu....I WILL get it. It doesn't matter where I am either. I got mac and cheese at a Jewish deli in Chicago...like an idiot.....because, I clearly have a problem.

The sad part of all of this is, I am usually unimpressed with it. Restaurants all to often overcomplicate mac or even worse, make it soupy.....ew.

Which is why it took me this long to go to Jus' Mac. I couldn't bare another disappointment. I approached a daunting menu of mac in EVERY variety barring durian fruit mac and cheese - but that would be weird.

I wearily ordered my blue cheese mac at the counter and started making deals with G-d. "Please, please....don't let me down."

10 minutes later my party and I were served with personal sized cast iron skillets (NICE TOUCH) filled to the brim with baked cheesy goodness (mine, topped with crunchy bread and blue cheese crumbles).

And it was goooooooooooooooooooood. Real Good. It was just the way a mac and cheese-centic restaurant should serve their namesake.....RELIEF!

Not too pungent, not too soupy......"jus' good". It would definitely hit the spot if you were hankering for the home-style variety.

Notice I'm not overselling you....good is the perfect adjective for a place like Jus' Mac.

Other good things:

Environment: casual, but hip. Very Heightsy, minus Washington nightlife.

Price: It's getting harder and harder to find a filling, tasty meal under $10, and that small skillet satisfies me just fine (no apps required).

Drinks: Keepin' it local with St. Arnold's by the bottle.

But if you are the owner......think about:

Mini skillets or "halfsies".  With SO many varieties of mac, am I seriously expected to choose just one? It can't be that hard to find a way to serve me 2 styles without having to buy 2 macs? Who's with me?

New garnish: The bread served on the side is appreciated, but a Parmesan crisp seems more appropriate. I'm such a critic.

Noodles: All macs are served with mini elbows. Why so serious?

Bottom line: You won't be blown away by Jus' Mac, but your curiousity for options like the Homerun Mac will having you coming back for more

Pagoda

4 out of 5 Stars
Website
4705 Inker St
Houston, TX 77007
(832) 673-0400

The Great Arctic Freeze of 2011 had me craving pho! The dilemma: I was nowhere near Van Loc - my "pho-to".

Solution: Pagoda - as I had no issue spending a extra $2 on "fancy" pho so long as it's delicious and nearby (since I was in The Heights).

You know that feeling when your friend has described someone for weeks, months or years and you finally meet them and they sound / look nothing like what you built up inside your mind?

That's what happened with me and Pagoda. I have passed what I realize now is an upscale, trendy Vietnamese hot spot more than 100 times thinking it was a quaint, random bungalow turned Vietnamese Ma and Pa restaurant.

And why wouldn't I - it looks like a typical Heights house.

WRONG. SO WRONG.

To my surprise, Pagoda's got it going on, but it appears nobody knows it as we were one of 2 tables in this 2 story gem (maybe it was the weather).

Pagoda boasts an asian-zen decor with grand chandeliers and a gorgeous bar.

Mind blowing and extremely contrary to my imagination.

Many Vietnamese fanatics would criticize its menu much like others criticize Gigi's Americanized Asian fare in the Galleria. You are not going to find $5 noodle dishes here like you might at more authentic spots in Midtown. What you will find is a rather large selection of Vietnamese inspired dishes that will make your taste buds dance in excitement.

My trio started out with the spring rolls that came with shrimp and pork. I went sans pork and thoroughly enjoyed each bite with an excellent peanut dipping sauce.

Intrigued by the menu, my friends deviated from the pho plan and went with a pot roast and beef noodle dish, Dragon Noodle.

I however, stuck to my initial plan. The second I ordered my bowl of pho, I began having buyer's remorse. Should I really be ordering pho from a place with a live DJ on Thursdays????
My fears subsided after just one sip of broth and slurp of noodle. My craving quieted, my body temperature defrosted - heaven. I dressed my otherwise excellent beef broth with a little hoisin and a dash of Siracha in pure delight. I'll admit that the beef slices could have been a little less tough, but at $8, this was no deal breaker.

My friend's pot roast, the Bo Kho was the actual envy of the table. This was one of those "stick to your bones" stews that looked as delicious as it tasted. Served in a deep bowl of dark brown sweet and savory gravy with a fresh baguette on the side to dip with, it's a dish not to miss.

I did not make room for the Dragon Noodles, but my friend noted the freshness of the Chinese broccoli in the dish and cleaned his plate.

In addition to their excellent cuisine, Pagoda doubles as a lounge I would not mind having a drink or two in. As I mentioned, the bar itself was beautiful and produced an appetizing cocktail list. I passed this time, but would return for $5 martinis on Wednesdays or reverse happy hour on Thursdays.
Their upstairs doubles as an excellent spot for private events, mixers, and even a unique rehearsal dinner location.

To put a bow on this package, Pagoda's service was outstanding as well, starting with the warm hostess down to our friendly waiter.

Bottom line: Don't dismiss Pagoda as just another pretty Heights restaurant lacking true flavor. It's actually a date friendly bistro giving a gracious nod to Vietnamese cuisine in a surprisingly sexy setting.

BRC Gastropub

4 out of 5 Stars

Website
519 Shepherd Drive
Houston, TX 77007
(713) 861-2233

There are so many ways I could start this review given the name of the restaurant, but this is a family site (ha) so I'll behave.

I somehow got on BRC's extremely calculated mailing list for their weekly specials.

Calculated? Yes. The geniuses over at the Big Red Cock send you their weekly specials at 10:30 am.....who is NOT hungry by 10:30 when they are sitting in their cubicle with over an hour to kill before lunch...

just me?

...whatever...

After weeks of reading about their "mac of the day" I was completely conditioned to check them out.

Do you know what at that Big Red Cock outside this gastropub is crowing???? "Get your scrumptious, upscale comfort food HERE".

He's not full of feathers either....my meal was absolutely delicious.

The mood is set for intimate fun the moment you step inside BRC with its dramatic cream and red wallpaper (FEEL IT), cozy booths and cocktails tables.

We settled into our booth and read the wall sized menu of specials for the day that were so tempting, the regular menu was used just to compliment our pre-set selections.

The order: bison sliders, blue cheese mac, fries, and an order of their vegetable of the day - asparagus (all the makings for a fabulous meal).

I should add that we attended a zumba class prior to this feast. Did we feel guilty? Absolutely not! Each bite was totally worth the calories...and I don't say that often.

The highlight of the meal was a tie between the blue cheese mac (no shocker there) and the surprise hit - asparagus.

There is so much to say about their mac special - delivered in a small cast iron skillet - baked to perfection, complete with the crispy crumb topping we all yearn for.

For all those blue cheese nay-sayers.....there was nothing funky about this creamy goodness by way of noodles, crumbly bits of bacon and caramelized onions.

Often disappointed by restaurant produced mac and cheese, I was head over heels with this dish.

Then there was the asparagus special served with bacon jam and sour cream. Again, don't be dismayed. Yes, we totally passed on the sour cream and were skeptical about the bacon jam that was requested on the side. Not a second after we sampled the bacon jam, did we pour the entire ramekin  over the dish. You know that amazing moment when the syrup from your pancakes hit your side of bacon at breakfast.....that's what bacon jam is. And it made our healthy side gluttonous heaven.

On to the bison sliders....3 sliders paired with arugula, cheese and a spicy mayo - delectable, but not a must.

BRC's fries are served thin and twice cooked: once blanched, then fried....a perfect accompaniment to any meal. Be sure to ask your waiter about their dipping options - they have plenty!!

Our only real downer on the meal was the service. Don't get me wrong, our food came out in ample speed and our waiter was there for us when we needed him...but talk about pushy. It was unclear if he's trained to encourage us to order more than we needed to but he could have relaxed a bit. After all, didn't he know we came from zumba?

I kid.

The total damage after all was said and eaten: a cool $30 total between the two of us. No complaints from two girls totally satisfied with all the comfort food in the land.

So listen to me or the big red cock (whichever one you prefer) and head on over to BRC. It's a total home run on all of your guiltiest pleasures.

The Counter

3 out of 5 Stars

4601 Washington Ave
Houston, TX 77007
(713) 966-6123

If The Counter was a movie, I'd fire the casting director.

The menu features their endless combinations of burgers but the real star here is their PARMESAN FRIES.....O M G.

The setting: a modernized diner; as one yelper put it "a sterile white burger joint"

The plot: building the perfect burger out of an insane variety of ingredients (including brie, eggs, and Russian dressing????)

Climax: once you've picked your patty, bun, cheese and toppings - realizing you want to top it with peanut sauce......ugh, back to the drawing board!

Luckily for my pal and I, there was no time limit on coming up with a final decision for our burgers.....I don't think I've marked so many answers on one paper since the SAT!

Hungry from our workout, my friend and I eventually gave up and ordered from the pre-set options.

An Asian inspired veggie burger "in a bowl" for her, the Mediterranean turkey burger "in a bowl" for me.

Yup, The Counter lets you have a deconstructed burger, bun-less, ultimately in salad form - which works for me given I spent my last hour in Zumba.

Consensus:
My friend really enjoyed her veggie burger made of rice, cranberry and other veggies tossed with pineapple, carrots, lettuce and a gingery sauce.

I found my Mediterranean turkey burger bowl bowl (complete with cucumber, olives, pepperoncini and tzatziki sauce) to be very light but filling, albeit the turkey was rather dry.

Plot holes:
-While The Counter allows up to 4 toppings for an $8 1/3 lb burger....they charge extra for premium toppings. And unless, their sauteed mushrooms are truffles (which I doubt), I'm not impressed.

-The $8 burger does not include fries BUT the $5 parmesan fries that can easily be split 3 ways IS A MUST. Beautiful, golden, skinny fries topped with the perfect amount of parmesan and some sort of garlic concoction is still making me blush. GLORIOUS.

Bottom Line:

The counter will NOT be your favorite burger joint. Let's face it, a burger needs to be greasy. And if I wanted a fancy burger with fancy toppings, I'd head over to Mockingbird Grill or  Washington's Block 7.

As my friend and I fantasized, however, I could definitely kick it at The Counter's patio overlooking Washington and enjoying those insane parmesan fries, maybe a dessert and a beer and be totally content.

-FIN-

Benjy's on Washington

4 out of 5 Stars

Website
5922 Washington Avenue
Houston, TX 77007
(713) 868-1131

I'm STILL full from an extremely satisfying meal from Benjy's on Washington.

I have always enjoyed both swanky locations for happy hour, but somehow felt like the Rice Village location fell short on meals.

Thanks to Yelp Eats!, a pal and I decided to give the main dining room at this newer location a try.

Between the two of us, we got to try quite a bit off the Benjy's menu (which varies from the Rice Village menu).

Personal highlights:
Complimentary light bites upon arrival: consisted of ginger crackers, cheddar wafers and granola. Those cheddar wafers are CRAZY ADDICTIVE and I'm determined to learn how to make them.

Sashimi - SUPER FRESH (no surprise here) and gorgeous presentation

Boneless Short Ribs - INSANE. Tender. Flavorful. Filling.

Salmon - I'm not a huge fan of cooked salmon, but I definitely enjoyed tasting my friend's entree. The couscous complimented the dish perfectly, but we both agreed the Asian pears were a little to acidic for our liking.

Chocolate cake - HOLY MOLY (and I'm not even a dessert girl). Apparently, Benjy's mom bakes these cakes in her own kitchen and delivers them to each location. I have yet to taste a more moist cake - simply decadent. Don't get me started on the icing...

***My birthday is in December - so whoever is responsible for getting the cake....take notes.***

Our service was initially shaky (it took a while for us to understand who our waiter was) but SIMONE more than made up for it. He was personable, knowledgeable and definitely contributed to making our dining experience a pleasure.

I can't get over how consistently delicious and beautiful each dish was.

It's official, Benjy's has officially moved from "just happy hour / drinks" and into full blown dinner territory!!

Candelari's

2 out of 5 Stars

2617 W Holcombe
Houston, TX 77025
(713) 662-2825

For all locations, visit website.

Yikes! I gotta agree with Yelp here.

What is wrong with the Candelari's on Holcombe?

I was sad to see Candelari's leave their small Bellaire location as it was down the street from my apartment.

I have visited their Heights / Washington location and was also a happy customer.

Holcombe? What did you do?

My friend and I walked into an almost empty restaurant after a long "Monday Funday" (thank you, vets). We ordered a calamari appetizer and a shroom and olive pizza.

I noticed our appetizer took quite a while (especially since we were one of the only patrons) and felt the need to clarify to our waiter we expected it come out first. He confirmed that was the plan but conveyed the pizza may be ready first. Get it together, kitchen!

The calamari came out and was par for course. Pro - the dish also came with fried artichoke! Con -the marinara was pretty bland and on the watery side.

The pizza came out shortly after and just didn't do it for me at all. The crust was thin, but not crispy. The dough needed more salt. Overall, there was just a lack of flavor explosion that I've come to expect thanks to Grimaldi's, Dolce Vita, and Pinks.

Our waiter also rubbed me the wrong way. So I'll admit I'm a slow eater and I tend to pick at my food a bit when I'm almost done. There is nothing more annoying then feeling rushed to finish your meal when the waiter asks you if he can clear the table TWICE.

Yeah, dude, still eating...

Note that he was not worried about table turnover (as it was empty) and they were not about to close.

When I actually did finish my meal, we received our check.

Somehow we each paid $14 without tip. The bill was right, I was just surprised by the total. I'm fine paying $20 each for Grimaldi's, but this was not cutting it.

No Thanks, Candelari's on Holcombe. I'll drive the other direction to Washington, should we choose to meet again.

Block 7 Wine Co

3 out of 5 Stars

Website
720 Shepherd Dr
Houston, TX 77007
(713) 572-2565

Block 7 - I am still waiting for you to "wow" me. I have been a few times and each time your bring me up and break me down all at the same time. What gives?

I am not a huge fan of the decor here. They are going for that unfinished / industrial look, but it's a little too "cold" for me.

Here is a list of things I was impressed with:
-Yes! The wine prices are attractive!
-Your burger. Original! I totally respected the Gruyere instead of American or Swiss. You were a pleasure.
-Fries were thin, flavorful and PLENTIFUL. One for the table is more than enough!!!
-Your cheese plate will do (though 13 Celsius is still the winner on this)

Here is where you fail for me:
- $4 for truffled popcorn? Really? Let's be frank here. You give me half the amount that comes in those microwavable mini bags. If you are going to make popcorn all fancy, can I get more than 2 handfuls?

-The same can be said for all the $4 snacks. They are all a notch better than free nuts at sports bars. If you really need a snack - splurge on the flatbreads because these "snacks" will not cut it.

-my friend got your Gulf Shrimp. She thought this was a main meal as it is listed under "Market" and priced at $11. The fact of the matter is, the dish is a tiny app the the size of my baby fist (I have small hands). If you want to serve this, go right ahead, but market it appropriately.

-Not that it was expensive by any means, but they never mention they are charging you for the water pitcher they keep refilling at your table. Sure, it's distilled. Sure, it's only about $1 per refill. But when you surprise me with the charge on the bill, it leaves my mouth a little dry (ironically).

The wrap up:
After my 2 mixed trips, I'm not done with you yet. I have a lot of lessons learned and am hopeful we can make things work between us. However,  the money you save me on wine, you get back with your overpriced snacks, surprise water charges and falsely advertised offerings.

I have not visited your retail section, but am looking forward to it more than your restaurant /bar.

For more locations visit website.

I have a fever and the only cure is more BERRYHILL!

It starts out subtle....just a little itch that needs a scratch....and then cold sweats...some shivers and my friends are off to grab the original fish tacos (no cabbage, extra sauce on the side).

We can all get turned off by chain restaurants, but Berryhill's roots are right here in Houston. LOVE that.

You got to respect some of the deals offered by Berryhill:
- $1.99 fish tacos with a drink thanks to the recession.
- $1.99 bar bites like chicken tamales
- Free bottomless chips and salsa bar including that amazing cilantro ranch dip

What to order:
-1 original fish taco (each taco is stuffed with 2 pieces of  tempura battered fish that are held together with 2 corn tortillas for max durability). The "Fannet way" is to take the extra tortilla and 2nd piece of fish and BAM - 2 fish tacos!

-1 chicken tamale

-1 side of rice or corn on cob

Happiness ensues.

Whether you are ordering take out or dining in, service is always super fast. And if you order right, you can easily get a great meal under ten bux.

Berryhill. Because sometimes you don't want tex mex.

Chiloso's Taco House

4 out of 5 Stars

701 E 20th St
Houston, TX 77246
(713) 868-2273

I am glad we met, Chilosos!

You are adorable and I can picture you in Austin. Perhaps you are run by one family? I hope so.

Chilosos is a cute lil bungalow serving breakfast and lunch, primarily in taco form.

I came for breakfast and was impressed with my options, especially the 3 different types of sausage. I went with a potato and egg and Chapel Hill sausage and egg. Both came STUFFED in a thick and doughy flour tortilla (no messy taco situation here).

It's hard to mess up a b-fast taco, so I am not going to rave about the flavor. All you need to know is, Chilosos fits the bill! And at $1.75 a taco (while supporting a local business) you aren't going to find a better deal.

The house is small, so you are lucky to snag a table. Service is wonderful - especially the sweet lady taking orders.

BONUS - They serve Mexican Coca-Cola (the best kind of coke) which helps wash down the fire from the green salsa I poured on my tacos (watch out).

TIP - This is not a dinner stop, they usually close around 3 and on Sundays 1:30!

Dragon Bowl Asian Bistro

OK-WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT DRAGON BOWL?!

Make your own stir fry - made to order?!?! Why aren't there more of these establishments in Houston???

I was shocked to see some less than stellar reviews on this place. It appears people are not selecting the BYOB (Build You Own Bowl).

Dragon Bowl specializes in a concept where you choose a protein, veggies, a carb, and sauce. A chef proceeds to saute everything you selected in a wok (like a Mongolian bar-b-q).

Let's touch on all the goodness that is Dragon Bowl.

-The staff is SUPER NICE

-They are not shiesty and let you mix and match everything (no limits on how many veggies you can put in your bowl. They only charge extra for shrimp, udon noodles, and extra sauce

-They stir fry right in front of you so you can tell how clean they are (the place already appears clean)

-FAST - I ordered my bowl at the register and had it at my table 5 minutes later (on a Saturday night)!

Props to Dragon Bowl on their variety of options - SO MANY VEGGIES and their carb options include brown rice, white rice, Singapore noodles, vermicelli and Udon (my fave).

This is definitely one of my new fave lunch or casual dinner spots.

I have yet to try the sushi, so I can't speak to that part of the menu.

All I know is that Dragon Bowl is so necessary!

PS-the bowls are HUGE. You can definitely save half for another meal.

Next time I ago, I will probably share an app and save half the bowl for later.

GO! GO! GO!

The Broken Spoke Cafe

1809 Washington Ave
Houston, TX 77007

I HEART MUSSELS!

I could not wait to get my hands on the mussel and frites at Broken Spoke.

You can understand my disappointment when I found out they had RUN OUT OF MUSSELS on Saturday night.

HEARTBREAK!

The staff could not be more sympathetic and offered a free appetizers- points there!

On to what I did get to experience there:
BEER - wow! I am no beer expert, but I know the few beers they had on tap were impressive. I wish I could remember the one I got, but if you ask for the STRONG one - you will be a happy camper. According to the bartender, 3 of these got him blind drunk on his bday. I was feeling pretty good after 1.

Free Appetizer: Shrimp Escargot IE: Garlicky goodness - insanely FLAVORFUL. I'll admit that it would not be as delicious if it wasn't free as it only comes with 6 shrimp that were pretty tiny.

Since I could not get the mussels, I went with the Bouchée de Bruxelles (fancy name for chicken pot pie). It was good..not great...I definitely felt fatter after consuming all the heavy cream. I will not be ordering it again.
My friend got the pork tenderloin and recommended to never order it (overcooked / dry).

Frites - they come with EVERYTHING. I prefer mine super crispy. Based on appearance, I thought I would be underwhelmed - but after first bite, I realized they were superb.

Service was great! Super nice bartender and the woman who seems to run the show is as real as can be.

I hope to re-review this place and give it a 5 once I return for those amazing mussels I keep hearing about!

Until then, I will think fondly of the beer and atmosphere...

***UPDATE***

I came. I saw. I CONQURED 2 out of the 8 types of mussels The Broken Spoke offers:

La Moule Mariniere (a white wine, celery and onion mixture) as well as the La Moule a l'Escargot (flavored similarly to the shrimp escargot - garlic infusion (shocker).

This is the place to go for Mussels and frites, ultimatley bumping its rating from 3 to 4 out 5 stars!

Part 1:

If noodles is what you want - Jenni's is where to go. They have so many different options (noodles soups, noodle dishes, flat noodles, wide noodles, sweet noodles (though I did not see glass noodles).

I really prefer this new location - much more comfy and spacious than the the original.

Food: I ordered the Vietnamese egg rolls and the "stir me crazy" entree (substituted with Udon noodles).

Both selections were delicious and not too greasy.

Service: FAST and FRIENDLY. You order up front so if you are with a group, you don't have to worry about splitting the bill. The guy taking my order listened to what I was craving and made a perfect choice for me. They also have pictures of all their dishes in case you want a preview of what you are in store for.

Jenni's is great for a casual date, group gathering, or take out.

Part 2 (updated):
I had to do an update after yesterday's dinner. I ordered the same thing as usual (Stir Me Crazy). This time, my order came out to $18!!!

WHY? They decided to charge me for all these things they normally don't - it was not cute.

So why the $18 for a noodle dinner (this did include a springroll...but still).

They charged me extra for each of the following things SEPARATELY:

a) Subbed soba noodles for udon noodles
b) Asked If I could do half beef and half tofu (they said no, they will just charge me extra for tofu)
c) then they asked if I wanted my tofu crispy or soft. I said crispy (obviously - ha) and they charged me extra for that too (on top of the charge for tofu in the first place).

I was not impressed. It was shameful.

So, ya - I'm a lil mad at the crew @ Jenni's for being kinda sheisty.

BELIEVE THE HYPE! After you've enjoyed the delectable and refreshing sno-ball at Mam's, you will NEVER be satisfied with a sno-cone again.

When I first heard Houston finally got a sno ball stand, I could not be more excited (I used to go to Casey's sno-ball stand weekly during my summers in Austin).

FLAVORS - They have every flavor you can imagine (from pink lemonade to wedding cake) and some you may have never heard of (ie-chermoya which was fruity but not too sweet).

I go with chocolate. I know what you are thinking - but trust me, it's great.

Why sno-balls over cones? TEXTURE. It really feels like you are eating smooth, cool snow from heaven - that's right. Heaven.

Why Mam's? Quaint as can be, just look at the sky blue trailer. Plus they have some benches so  you can sit and enjoy your favorite new treat before it melts.

AND - its dog friendly! Bring your favorite pooch - they even have doggy cones!
